Increasingly, companies are becoming attracted to the idea of outsourcing the complete control and management of its print systems, using a simple cost per copy pricing model. This pricing model combines the elements of supplies and service into one fixed Cost Per Copy (CPC) price. Taking this route, companies can very easily understand their print cots, and can allocate these costs proportionately to user groups and departments.

Whichever route is taken to finance the Managed Print Services undertaking, there is no avoiding the decision to implement the infrastructure to avoid waste, control costs and increase returns on profitability.

India, like several other developing nations such as China and Ghana, has long taken the brunt of other, more developed nations’ garbage. Finally, however, India has had enough. Realizing that it is producing its own e-waste that must also be disposed of in a proper manner, India’s government is considering putting a ban on all ewaste imports. Read the Times of India article here.

"The fact that close to half of all U.S. states now have some sort of e-waste legislation is perhaps another indicator that we should be paying more attention. In my own state (New Jersey), it is illegal to send various electronics to landfills. But invariably, when I ask friends about this, they haven’t a clue and I still see stuff sitting curbside from time to time in my neighborhood. The commercial world fallout related to e-waste ignorance is twofold: first, regulatory compliance (of course) dictates how and when you can get rid of certain data, which is one reason that people hold onto stuff that should be recycled; the bigger the quantity you are ditching, the more interest certain less-than-scrupulous organizations have in getting their hands on your technology and disposing of it as cheaply as possible."

As Heather Clancy points out in her article about e-waste, it is becoming a growing concern for businesses and residents alike. Her five suggestions can be followed on a personal basis. If people would recognize this growing need and demand action, we all might be a little better off–especially those people in underdeveloped nations such as Ghana.

As R2 and e-Steward standards are compared, keep in mind that GES is BAN accredited and follows a strict zero landfill/no exporting rule.
